Historical Alamosa Ranch Title

Alomos Ranch Estates surround a historic New Mexico ranch house and blacksmith shop that are registered as a State Historical Site. The historical property is known as the Alamosa Ranch and Blacksmith Shop. The adobe ranch house has a long and colorful history as a working cattle ranch, hunting and fishing resort and dude ranch. The Lorenzo Armijo family built the original structure, consisting of two rooms made of sod wall about 1904.

Alomosa ranch house Robert Martin, a prominent New Mexico rancher and businessman, purchased the ranch in 1920. Bob Martin was truly a pioneer who had come to Engle, NM in 1891 'punching cows' in the San Andres with Eugene Manlove Rhodes, the well known cowboy author. Martin purchased the Black Range Stage Line, running from Engle to Cuchillo, in 1902. The stage line, which included the Engle Ferry across the Rio Grande, ran just south of the ranch house. The ranch was sold to Chandler Elkins in 1951, who sold it to Alamosa Land and Cattle Company in 1971. Robert and Elizabeth Crain purchased the house and surrounding property in 1996, and have done much to restore the house to its original elegance.

1920s handout Throughout its long history, the property has been a working cattle ranch using the K Lazy Y cattle brand. In the 1920s, the ranch was used as a hunting and fishing resort and dude ranch under the name of The Los Alomos Ranch, from which the title of our subdivision was derived. The ranch house was a favorite gathering spot in Sierra County, the site of public dances and private parties. The original gas lamps can be seen in the dining room of the house and are still used today.
